When we talk of insurance, we are referring to risks in all forms. Hence, having for an insurance policy is just a way of sharing our risks with other people with similar risks.

However, while some risks can be insured (i.e. insurable risks), some cannot be insured according to their nature (i.e. non-insurable risks).

Insurable Risks

Insurable risks are the type of risks in which the insurer makes provision for or insures against because it is possible to collect, calculate and estimate the likely future losses. Insurable risks have previous statistics which are used as a basis for estimating the premium. It holds out the prospect of loss but not gain. The risks can be forecast and measured e.g. motor insurance, marine insurance, life insurance etc.

This type of risk is the one in which the chance of occurrence can be deduced, from the available information on the frequency of similar past occurrence. Examples of what an insurable risk is as explained:

Example1: The probability (or chance) that a certain vehicle will be involved in an accident in year 2011 (out of the total vehicle insured that year 2011) can be determined from the number of vehicles that were involved in accidents in each of some previous years (out of the total vehicle insured those years).

Example2: The probability (or chance) that a man (or woman) of a certain age will die in the ensuring year can be estimated by the fraction of people of that age that died in each of some previous years.

Non-insurable Risks

Non-insurable risks are type of risks which the insurer is not ready to insure against simply because the likely future losses cannot be estimated and calculated. It holds the prospect of gain as well as loss. The risk cannot be forecast and measured.

Example1: The chance that the demand for a commodity will fall next year due to a change in consumers’ taste will be difficult to estimate as previous statistics needed for it may not be available.

Example 2: The chance that a present production technique will become obsolete or out-of-date by next year as a result of technological advancement.

Other examples of non-insurable risks are:

1. Acts of God: All risks involving natural disasters referred to as acts of God such as

a. Earthquake

b. War

c. Flood

It should be noted that any building, property or life insured but lost during an occurrence of any act of God (listed above) cannot be compensated by an insurer. Also, this non-insurability is being extended to those in connection with radioactive contamination.

2. Gambling: You cannot insure your chances of losing a gambling game.

3. Loss of profit through competition: You cannot insure your chances of winning or losing in a competition.

4. Launching of new product: A manufacturer launching a new product cannot insure the chances of acceptability of the new product since it has not been market-tested.

5. Loss incurred as a result of bad/inefficient management: The ability to successfully manage an organization depends on many factors and the profit/loss depends on the judicious utilization of these factors, one of which is efficient management capability. The expected loss in an organization as a result of inefficiency cannot be insured.

6. Poor location of a business: A person situating a business in a poor location must know that the probability of its success is slim. Insuring such business is a sure way of duping an insurer.

7. Loss of profit as a result of fall in demand: The demand for any product varies with time and other factors. An insurer will never insure based on expected loss due to decrease in demand.

8. Speculation: This is the engagement in a venture offering the chance of considerable gain but the possibility of loss. A typical example is the action or practice of investing in stocks, property, etc., in the hope of profit from a rise or fall in market value but with the possibility of a loss. This cannot be insured because it is considered as a non-insurable risk.

9. Opening of a new shop/office: The opening of a new shop is considered a non-insurable risk. You don’t know what to expect in the operation of the new shop; it is illogical for an insurer to accept in insuring a new shop for you.

10. Change in fashion: Fashion is a trend which cannot be predicted. Any expected change in fashion cannot be insured. A fashion house cannot be insured because the components of the fashion house may become outdated at any point in time.

11. Motoring offenses: You cannot obtain an insurance policy against expected fines for offenses committed while on wheels.

However, it should be noted that there is no clear distinction between insurable and non-insurable risks. Theoretically, an insurance company should be ready to insure anything if a sufficiently high premium would be paid. Nevertheless, the distinction is useful for practical purposes.

The advantages of camping holidays begin with adventure. A family can go wherever they want and camp there for as long as they have. From a camping base a family can go for walks out into the wild and see nature in its true habitat. They can also make their way over to huge lakes to fish or swim, and if they find an adventure park they can spend the day zip lining around the trees as fast as they can go, which is fun for everyone.

This is also where the disadvantages begin however, because some people like the routine they have and won’t want it disturbed by living in a tent for a week or two. Sometimes there are no shower facilities and people will need to use a solar shower, which isn’t a problem for most, but some people could feel self-conscious about their body when using one. Toilets are another big disadvantage if a camp site doesn’t have the facilities provided, as people will need to go and dig themselves a hole to use, or use a communal one, which many consider to be worse.

For others the freedom of being in the outdoors outweighs all disadvantages relating to homely comforts such as showering and using the toilet. They also enjoy not being able to use their mobile phones, as these are an invasion which can ruin a holiday if someone is using theirs constantly. Whilst camping, people will also be away from the thick smog of the city, something many consider to be unhealthy. The great outdoors has nothing but fresh air, and most people consider this a huge advantage of camping holidays.

To break it down to a list of the core advantages and disadvantages, this is what most people think of camping.

1) Adventure

2) Seeing Wildlife

3) Clean Air

4) No Mobile Phones

5) No Internet

6) No Traffic

7) No Interruptions

1) No Toilet

2) No Shower

3) No Food Provided For You

4) Living In A Tent

5) Bugs

6) Little Or No Electricity

7) Nothing Much To Do If You’re Not Adventurous

In conclusion, the advantages and disadvantages of camping seem to be entirely based on opinion. What people need to realise is that camping can be great fun as long as everyone is involved in enjoying themselves, because once someone isn’t having fun, the trip is ruined. If worst comes to worst, building a huge camp fire and staying up late into the night is something everyone enjoys doing.

A writer from a national magazine called me this week. He wanted quotes for an article he is writing for the December issue. I was very excited. The article is about Prima Donnas. I asked him if he was sure I was the person he was trying to reach. I am humble and a team player, at least I think so.

He called the right person. I'm sure he found it ironic that I immediately thought of myself, but he spared me any analysis. He wanted my quotes about how a Prima Donna affects the workplace. Cool! My new book is about how personalities can create drama at work. He gave me an example of a sales rep who consistently outsells his co-workers. The sales rep does not follow any of the rules of his workplace. Every process must be adjusted to accommodate his schedule. In the magazine writer's words, "This guy breezes in and breezes out. No one really knows what he is doing, but they know when the checks come in."

That can be a dangerous situation. I felt tension and I do not work with the guy. Where are the boundaries? The writer then asked me for a few "snappy" lines. I do not know if I can be happy on command, but I tried. My first comment was that there are times when the circumstances require a unique personality. This is often so in sales. When you have a special personality, people remember you and look forward to seeing you. They also buy your products, especially if they are unique and helpful too.

The writer told me that he wanted some "psychological jargon" for the article. I'm not sure if the Prima Donna has a personality disorder. I think that negotiating the workplace often requires adjusting yourself to be effective. Sales does not require modesty. Belief in the product and confidence in your ability to sell it is cruel. Moral imperatives apply. There are lots of products that cause harm and they are sold just as enthusiastically as any other. In fact, many people are sold things that they can not afford or do not need because the person selling it is so convincing.

This Prima Donna example was hard to nail down. This guy is competing with his co-workers. In some circles, we are taught that people will not like you when you win. Winners will tell you that it comes with the territory. One of my classes had a discussion about Rosa Parks. Some of us saw a biography about her that examined her reasons for leaving Alabama and making Detroit her hometown. People in the Civil Rights Movement were mean to her. International exposure inspired a lot of jealousy. Can you imagine a sweeter, more humble person than Rosa Parks? Few of us have that level of grace. All of us have to deal with the fact that people do not like things about us. If that reason is that you are outselling them, so be it!

I do not think the writer wanted me to be "pro-Prima Donna." It's provided to be a negative description. I really tried, but my last quote was equally positive. I thought of another unique quality of the sales profession. They work for the customer. Their work often happens outside of the workplace, or at least away from direct supervision. They are accountable to the people they are selling to. The guy is breezing in and out because it is a formality. His work is done in the trenches. The lack of structure seems to suit him.

I wish I could think of something snappy, wry, and cynical but we have so much to learn from each other. The only time that being a Prima Donna is bad is when they are bad at what they do. There is another name that applies to that situation – Drama Queen. Rosa Parks was the real thing. She did what she had to do and accepted the consequences, good and bad. She maintained her humility through her very long life. We did not see her on the red carpet in the latest designer clothing. She worked until she could not work any more. She is a great example of how to be great and humble at the same time.

People do not understand you when you stand out. Needing to fit in can keep you from being exceptional. You have to make a conscious choice. I'm sure the writer expected my responses to be different. There are times when what you do will not be popular or expected. Do it anyway!

Rhinoplasty is a long-standing, popular surgical procedure; it involves reshaping the nose in some way. Even slight modifications to this high-profile feature can make a tremendous difference in appearance.

Each nose job operation is customized to the individual; therefore, factors such as anesthesia type, recuperation time, and cost will vary. Closed rhinoplasty surgery involves very small incisions made on the inside of the nose. Open rhinoplasty surgery includes tiny inside incisions but also incorporates an outside cut. Thankfully, external scars often fade to almost invisible levels.

Let’s look at some common nose imperfections people want to correct.

  • Bumps. Some individuals have sizable bumps and removal of the protrusion can dramatically bring about refinement. Undoubtedly, a full facial appearance becomes impressively enhanced, but the profile sometimes realizes even greater visual rewards.
  • Excessive width. Certain people have considerably wide noses and wish to narrow the measurement. A skilled plastic surgeon can slim the width and allow the face to seem more balanced.
  • Excessive narrowness. Significantly wide noses sometimes detract from an otherwise eye-catching face, but extremely narrow noses can do the same. In this circumstance, a trained doctor increases the width of the nose to attain better harmony.
  • Largeness or droopiness. A nose that hangs down or is exceedingly large tends to steal the show, but typically not in a good way. Lifting and/or minimizing the length and/or width can make a huge difference in how an individual looks and feels.
  • Crooked or twisted. Correcting a nose that lacks symmetry takes skill and expertise. Depending on the degree of shifting, it may even be difficult for a highly-trained surgeon to attain precise proportions. Nevertheless, qualified hands can craft vast improvements in the deformity.
  • Minor imperfections. Some people need only slight changes to achieve satisfaction. For example, the removal of a small bump or slight nostril tweaking can produce gratifying results for certain individuals. An added perk? Few people will even know any work was done.

Naturally, there are other reasons why people seek out rhinoplasty besides the ones listed above. For example, some individuals suffer from nasal fractures, and others are displeased with the outcome of a prior nose job and want a revision. When rhinoplasty is performed for cosmetic purposes, insurance companies usually do not pay. However, if breathing is affected because of a structural abnormality (e.g., deviated septum), then insurance may cover the cost. Other procedures, such as a chin implant, may also be performed in conjunction with rhinoplasty; this tends to beautify the face in people with receding chins.

Rhinoplasty can make a tremendous difference in appearance. Nonetheless, the preparation and skill level of the physician often determines if the changes are positive.

Poor Battery Life

One of the greater frustrations of the Palm Pre, is the disappointingly poor battery life that is has. Often times, a fully charged phone may not last even for a full day. You can however, easily extend the life of your battery by trying some or all of the following suggestions.

* Stop automatic email check or extend duration between checks – (click envelope icon, click ’email’ and

open preferences. Select your account and change settings).

* Turn brightness setting to the lowest (screen and lock settings).

* Change ‘turn off’ feature to 30 seconds (screen and lock settings).

* Turn off blue tooth and wifi.

* Log out of instant messengers (messaging settings).

* Turn off ‘auto locate’ (location services settings).

* Turn off ‘background data collection’ (location services settings).

* Avoid listening to music, viewing video, etc – (counterintuitive to its use, but media does require greater

battery usage).

* Charge when able – (intuitive, but a ten minute charge can go a long way).

* Purchase an extended battery. Palm pre comes with an 1150mAh battery, but upgrades of 1350mAh and

2600mAh – to use as primary or as a backup.

These tips should help you get a longer life out of your phone on days you may be away from steady electricity. It should be noted that the extended battery also extends the width of the palm pre by about 4mm. For those traveling or heavy media users, it may be worth the upgrade.

Tis the season for holiday sales!

Shoppers are flocking online in search of gift giving ideas. According to Mashable, “65% of shoppers tap social media looking for the perfect gift… and two out of three shoppers purchased a gift they found via social media.”

So what are the best ways to cash in on seasonal sales with your business?

Whether you are a service-based business or sell products, here’s some suggestions to get in the spirit with holiday sales.

1) Learn from the Ghost of Christmas Past

Look at metrics from last year’s holiday sales. What products were bestsellers? Which promotions created the biggest lift in sales? What special offers were a total bomb?

Discover what worked and didn’t so you can capitalize on it when you plan this year’s promotions.

2) Make a Holiday Social Media Cover Image

Decorate your social media business pages with a specially designed cover image. It’s the perfect place to announce special holidays promotions and deals.

Be sure to create one for all of your social media accounts.

3) Use Holiday Hashtags

Twitter shoppers may use hashtags to find their next purchase. So take advantage of hashtags to get discovered.

Some popular hashtags include: #blackFriday, #DIY, #holidayssavings, #stockingstuffers, #holidays, #Christmas, #Hannukah, #Kwanzaa, #NewYears

4) Create Social Media Graphics for Promos and Deals

Everyone loves getting a great deal when holiday shopping. Make festive graphics promoting special promotions that make purchasing the perfect item irresistible.

Deals can include:

• one day only,

• limited quantity sales,

• buy-one-get-one free,

• special discounts or holiday coupons.

Consider offering a “12 days of Christmas” promotion with a special deal each day!

Canva makes it easy to make custom holiday social media graphics.

5) Boost Sales with Free Shipping

Consider offering free shipping for holidays gifts. Create highly visible buttons or banners promoting it on your website.

Or you can boost the order size by offering free shipping on orders over a bigger dollar amount such as $100.

Studies show that shipping costs are one of the biggest deterrents to making a purchase online so this one tactic could result in big returns for you.

6) Offer Gift Ideas

Holiday shopping can be frustrating when you don’t know what to buy for the person who has everything. You’ll want to promote your bestselling gifts.

Make gift buying easy by sharing gift suggestions like:

Then offer links to purchase each of the items you mention on your blog and on social media.

Better yet, if you have a blog, write articles based on these topics and refer to your products within the article with links back to the purchase page.

7) Write Reviews

If you offer one of the hot new products of the season, consider writing and posting a review about it on your blog. In this review you could mention your own offerings that would be a great gift accompaniment.

As an example, do a review of the top three smart phone accessories for Mom this Christmas and share pictures of them with a red bow on them along with a side-by-side features comparison. Then mention how your offerings go great with these gift ideas while including links to purchase.

You could also incorporate your Amazon affiliate link for those products

8) Suggest Stocking Stuffer Ideas

Help idea stumped shoppers by offering suggestions for small items for everyone on their shopping list!

Write a blog post with the hottest stocking stuffers for the season. Share daily stocking stuffer ideas on social media using hashtags like: #beststockingstuffers2016 #cheapstockingstuffers #stockingstuffersforwomen

9) Reward Loyal Customers

Offer to give a $100 Gift Card to a randomly selected customer caught posting a picture or video with your product on social media. Set up a campaign having them use a special hash tag like #christmascountdown.

This can help your promotional campaigns to go viral as customers share on their timeline and family/friends see their post.

10) Share Holiday Spirit

Connect to the spirit of the holidays in your customer’s hearts. Engage your customers by asking them their favourite holiday tradition.

Get people to interact with your brand by asking them to share:

a. Their most-loved family recipes from Thanksgiving or another holiday event.

b. What their most loved Christmas song is.

c. DIY Christmas decorating tips.

d. Easy gift wrapping suggestions.
